We’ve eaten at Kozue in Wallingford a couple of times now. Kozue is a Japanese restaurant, with everything from bento boxes to sushi. Located near the western end of Wallingford, it is much, much better than its near neighbor Musashi’s. The place is small, we had to wait a few minutes both times we visited.
For appetizers, we’ve had a fantastic poke dish with cucumbers, avocados and seaweed. The gyoza and miso are on par with some of our favorite sushi places.
The sushi has been universally enjoyable. In general the rolls are bite sized — not the giant sized rolls that cause quite a mess. The Seattle roll, with cucumber and salmon, is my favorite. The rainbow roll, a California roll covered with a bunch of different kinds of fish, got raves as the best in town. The lava roll, a cucumber roll with tuna coming out the top, was really good but a bit hard to eat. The sweet shrimp and shrimp heads got a thumbs up as well.
The supreme chirashi bowl was unbelievable. There were around 12 kinds of fish in one half, eggs and vegetables in the other. The biggest bowl of yummy goodness evah.
To top it all off, they have deep fried green tea ice cream, which was always a big hit with our crew. We used to order it at Sam’s Sushi in Ballard, but they stopped making it. A devastating day. So when it was spotted on the Kozue menu, cheers went up around the table.
The hardest part for us will be balancing wanting our new favorites vs. trying something new on the extensive menu. We’ll definitely be back!
