Last week, I tried Golden City for lunch with some co-workers. Golden City is known for their $3.95 lunch specials. You get a good sized portion of one of 40 choices over rice, served in a pyrex pie plate. For an extra $2, you can have your entree with fried rice, noodles, soup, and an egg roll.
A lot of people will see the $4 price tag and the size of the meal and proclaim it good based on those factors alone. I’m not one of those people. I’m more than happy to shell out the couple extra bucks it takes to have better food.
I ordered the black bean chicken lunch special, which was on the blah side of okay. One of my co-workers ordered chicken and vegetables. After sending back the beef she was brought, she found the chicken to be pretty mediocre. My other co-worker ordered General Tso’s Chicken and ate all the sides. He had just a couple bites of the chicken itself.
They do have a full bar, and it looked like it might be okay for a divey drink. That doesn’t help much at lunch, however.
Was it worth $4? Maybe. As one of my friends said, “It is typical greasy Chinese.” If that’s how you roll, the price is right. Would I ever want to eat it again? No way.
