I enjoy a good dive bar. There’s something perfectly pleasant about spending a few hours on a Sunday afternoon playing Scrabble and drinking beers with friends at a local dive. The Sloop is a great representative of the species.
The reason to go to the Sloop is the Slooper-sized beers. 33.8 ounces (1 litre) of Mac & Jack’s for $5.75. That’s really all the beer I need for an afternoon of Scrabbling. If piss beer is your drink of choice, you can get a Slooper-sized beer for $4. Nice! The sloop doesn’t serve mixed drinks, so enjoy the beer.
The food is not that great. We’ve had burgers and a couple of other things over the years and the food has always been adequate. Not gross, but nothing you’d crave either.
They have a couple of pool tables, a dart board, and the requisite hipsters after 9. Earlier in the day, the place is populated with salty locals. There’s an interesting transition period there where the crowd is half and half. Feels like the last 10 years in Ballard, with the youths pushing out the old-timers, played out nightly.
A side note about ratings… the ratings I give are based on other restaurants/bars of the same type. So the Sloop’s rating is against other bars. Just in case you were wondering how the Sloop could get the same rating as a steakhouse (Morton’s).
Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
